In a future Japan where civilization has crumbled due to the chaos unleashed by defense weapons, wastelands and deserts now dominate the landscape. Humanity has managed to survive by establishing fortress cities in various locations, each governing itself while bracing for the unpredictable defense weapons that still roam freely.
During this period, a phenomenon known as the Rust Wind, which corrodes everything in its path, including organic matter, is wreaking havoc. Humanity is slowly succumbing to rust, suffering from Rust Sickness, a condition that ultimately leads to death. The source of the Rust Wind is thought to be mushroom spores, leading to the persecution of the clan known as the Mushroom Guardians, who possess expertise in handling mushrooms. However, it is a well-known fact that mushrooms can help suppress rust sickness, even if they cannot fully cure it.
Defying public opinion, a boy named Akahoshi Bisco, a Mushroom Guardian dedicated to cultivating mushrooms as a defense against rust, has stirred controversy and has even been placed under a bounty as the notorious outlaw Man-Eating Mushroom. Bisco's mission is to locate the legendary medicinal mushroom known as the Rust Eater, a revered treasure passed down among the Mushroom Guardians.
