In 1885, Captain Ralph Crewe, a wealthy Englishman residing in British India, sends his his beloved eight year old daughter, Sara, back to London to enroll at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies. Sara excels academically and is cherished by her classmates and friends, though she unfortunately gains the ire of the jealous class representative, Lavinia Herbert. On her ninth birthday, Sara receives the heartbreaking news of her father's passing and the family’s financial ruin from Miss Minchin, who cruelly decides to make the newly orphaned girl work as an unpaid maid at the school. Despite the attempts by Miss Minchin and Lavinia to make Sara's life unbearable and to diminish her spirit, Sara, with the support of her friends, strives to endure these challenges through her kindness.
