Our story begins with Goku, a young boy with a monkey tail who lives alone in the forest. One day, he meets a spirited girl named Bulma, who is searching for something called Dragon Balls. When gathered, these Dragon Balls can summon the dragon Shenron, who has the ability to grant any one wish. It turns out that Goku possesses one, a memento from his late grandfather. Feeling the call to adventure, Goku decides to leave home for the first time and joins Bulma to collect the remaining Dragon Balls.
Goku's journey introduces him to many new friends, enemies, and rivals, including Master Roshi, who trains him in martial arts; the shape-shifter Oolong, who tries to steal the Dragon Balls for himself before joining them; and Yamcha, the desert bandit. Many powerful foes also learn about the Dragon Balls and attempt to seize their power for themselves, such as Emperor Pilaf, Commander Red of the Red Ribbon Army, and the demonic fighter King Piccolo.
