In the summer of 1863, amid the turmoil of the American Civil War, the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—are living with their father, Frederick, in their Pennsylvania home. To protect themselves from the impacts of war, the sisters and their mother, Mary, are sent to stay with their aunt Martha. As the years go by, the sisters start to discover their unique identities and pursue their individual paths. Meg chooses to work as a tutor, Beth immerses herself in learning the piano, Amy dedicates herself to her education, and Mary engages in charitable work.
