Maria faced the loss of her parents at a young age, enduring many challenges along the way. In 1936, during her return from a graduation trip at a teacher's college, she felt a sudden calling to become a nun and journeyed to Salzburg. Upon visiting Nonnberg Abbey, known for its strict traditions, she applied and was accepted as a novice. Yet, Maria's free spirit and disregard for rigid customs soon led her to be seen as a challenge within the convent. Eventually, she was sent to the home of Captain von Trapp, a nobleman and Austrian hero, to serve as a tutor for his second daughter, also named Maria. Initially, the seven children were reserved and defiant, but they gradually began to embrace the warmth and sincerity of Maria's character. In the process, Captain von Trapp found himself drawn to her as well.
