In Ginza, Tokyo, the upscale Chinese restaurant Gobancho Hanten takes great pride in being recognized as the best place in Japan for Chinese cuisine. One evening after the restaurant had closed, a young boy walked in, disregarding the waiter's attempts to stop him, and boldly demands to be served fried rice. When the fried rice was finally served, he found it lacking in quality and certainly not deserving of the title "best in Japan." Unsatisfied, he barges into the kitchen, tosses aside the fried rice along with his criticism, and puts on a chef's coat to make it himself. The boy’s name is Jan Akiyama, and he is the grandson of Kaiichiro Akiyama, a chef known as "The Master of Chinese Cuisine." As Jan begins working at the restaurant, he engages in culinary fights with various chefs, including Kiriko Gobanchou, driven by his belief that cooking is a battle.
